If you have a developer’s license, head over to the Headway forums and grab your new 1.7 BETA. This should be used on test sites only, it isn’t ready for your live sites so use at own risk.
A couple sweet changes include:
- Columns
- One touch Search in Nav
- More Exporting Power
- More Leaf Customization
- Auto Upgrade
- MUCH MUCH MORE
In semi related news, Headway also announced that it plays nice with WordPress’s GPL. This is big news because currently one of Headway’s competitors is locked in a public battle with WordPress that might end up going to court.

I’ve been playing with 1.7 on a test site and I can’t believe what Clay’s come out with this time around. In fact, it’s almost a new theme altogether, as opposed to a simple upgrade. Outstanding.
And yes, the GPL news is excellent. Makes that competitor seem even more isolated and out the loop on the WordPess scene.
Oh yeah amazing upgrade! The auto upgrade alone is a god send when you have a couple different sites running Headway.
I keep telling my colleague, if this is what happens from Headway 1.6 – 1.7, imagine what something like Headway 2.0 will bring in the future.
The GPL thing was also great news. I looked into GPL when I heard about the controversy because I had no idea what it is. After learning about it I am glad Headway was able to comply. Seems like lots of people are making money even complying with GPL so I find all the calls of “the GPL is marxist” to be pure rhetoric.
Does headway support multiuser yet?

Not yet. It is kind of a tough issue because Headway is so database driven.
IMO, the best thing to do is to somehow offer multisite, but the sites underneath the main one are not Headway driven, just use traditional themes.
I understand, but it would be so awesome once we are able to use it for multisites.

One question is that:
For now it still has restrictions and does not comply with GNU/GPL. There is no coding reason at all to push the legal compliance to the next version, which can happen now or in an year.
Licensing has nothing to do with coding so the Headway developers should have moved to a legal position ASAP and not delaying it with any excuses.
Another question:
Why can’t it be installed in a per blog on a Multi-Site installation? I see no real cause for that. Table names should not be hard-coded — even if it uses its own tables the prefix should be dealed by WP — so it can be configured per site as any other theme.
